Secondary Education

Many schools in the Netherlands run one or more additional courses. These courses are on top of the basic education that is required for each stream. This results in more choice for pupils and clearer differentiation between secondary schools. The courses include: gymnasium (Greek and Latin for vwo pupils), accelerated vwo (where talented pupils do the compulsory vwo course in less hours so they can develop special subject related interests), bilingual education (where more than 50% of lesson hours are given in English), enhanced English (extra coaching and lessons in English), drama schools (an accreditation for a full drama programme), technasium (where there is an emphasis on project based science), sport schools (where pupils get extra time for sports).
